David Anctil: Making A Difference for Holy Trinity's Youth

The name of Holy Trinity parishioner, David "Dave" Anctil, is one that is synonymous with "youth involvement." Perhaps its due to his long-time service over the past fourteen years to youth through his roles as Treasurer of the Parents Association, Room Parent, or Cub/Girl Scout Leader. Or maybe its because he is the father of two current Holy Trinity School students, and three graduates. Most likely, however, its because of the important leadership role that Dave has held for four years as Director of the Catholic Youth Organization.

The "CYO" - as it is better-known - provides opportunities for all children --Catholic or not--to play sports in a fun, positive learning environment. Focusing on skill development, cooperation, responsibility, and sportsmanship, the CYO's main objective is "kids first, winning second."  Through athletic programs that include volleyball, basketball, and track, teams are organized to compete with other Catholic schools in the Portland area.  Football, cheerleading, and swimming are also CYO sports available for Holy Trinity's school children.  Dave's work supports Holy Trinity's efforts to teach sports to children, which in turn teach fundamental life skills, such as teamwork, dependability, self-esteem and confidence. In Dave's opinion, kids are taught one of life's most valuable lessons through CYO participation--the ability "to win with grace, or lose with dignity."  To date, the Holy Trinity CYO program boasts between 70 and 90 kids participating in various sports offered seasonally throughout the year.

Sound like fun? Dave acknowledges that working with kids is his favorite ministry, although he still finds time to contribute to Holy Trinity in other ways, including singing in the choir and serving as a lector. Dave is always looking for parishioners interested in helping out the CYO with such things as coaching, concession sales, and gymnasium staffing.  CYO sponsorship opportunities are also available--a $250 donation will allow local businesses to join family-owned Anctil Plumbing and Anctil Heating and Cooling by having their name proudly displayed on a banner hanging in Holy Trinity's gymnasium.  If you are interested in learning more about the Catholic Youth Organization--to volunteer, or to serve as a sponsor--please feel free to contact Dave by telephone at (503) 526-0741, by e-mail at cyo@h-t.org, or visit the Holy Trinity website at http://www.h-t.org/CYOAthletics.htm.
