Olympic Gold Medalist Helps Parish Community Kick Off
Holy Trinity's "Track and Field of Dreams"
On Sunday, May 20th, former Olympian, Mac Wilkins (pictured on left) joined the Committee for the Holy Trinity Track and Field of Dreams to celebrate the "synergy" achieved to date by publicly announcing the fundraising progress made in realizing Holy Trinity's "Track and Field of Dreams". Headed by Michael Bergmann (pictured on right), the Committee for the Holy Trinity Track and Field of Dreams (members include Kenya Palmer, Ron White, Ingrid Lowery, Jeremy Hewitt, and Steve Karakas) officially kicked off plans to upgrade the bark dust track located on the field behind the school with a state-of-the-art rubberized surface.
Slated for completion in September 2007, the track will not only benefit those at Holy Trinity's Parish and School, but also the Catholic Youth Organization Track Team and the community at large. "The new-and-improved track at Lincoln High School in Portland is in use almost 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year", exclaimed former Olympian, Mac Wilkins, speaking at Holy Trinity's ribbon-cutting event. The 1976 Olympic gold medalist (and former discus throw world record holder) applauded Holy Trinity's efforts to create a venue that will enable the entire community to utilize, even during Oregon's wettest seasons. Wilkins also highlighted the importance of such a project to today's children who are plagued by inactivity and obesity and do not have a life expectancy "of more than me (age 56)," he quipped.
Touted as a vehicle to achieve the “trinity” of healthy mind, spirit and body, the all-weather track is a dream of health and wellness shared by many, including our Pastor and Holy Trinity's Administrative, Pastoral and School Councils. Adding to Michael Bergmann's vision of "synergy," parishioner Marianne Schumann discussed how as a walker, the track serves not only as a place of exercise, but also as "a place to pray".
So far, contributions to the Track and Field of Dreams have come not only from Holy Trinity Parishioners, but from individuals in the community who are able to utilize matching gift programs and contributions from their employers. With $57,700 raised so far and a fundraising total goal of $100,000, support is still needed to help finish the job!
