Making a Difference in Holy Trinity Children’s Lives:  Michael Bergmann

Meet Holy Trinity Parishioner, Michael Bergmann.  Mike has been a Holy Trinity parishioner for ten years.  He’s married to Elaine and they have four children, Taylor, Meghann, Erin and Peter.

Mike is the coach of the Holy Trinity Track Team.  He organized the program five years ago and the program has grown from 25 participants that first year to 114 kids four years later.  The track team is comprised of Holy Trinity School children as well as children attending other schools who are members of the parish.  The squad is comprised of children in grades 3-8.

Mike is a long time Nike employee and he has drawn upon his Nike connections to help coach the team.  He’s been assisted by HT Nike coaches:  John Truax and Charlie RosaWillie Haliburton is also a coach.  Holy Trinity has won the CYO Track Championship three of the last six years.

As a result of his involvement and the success of the program, Mike has become active on the Board of Portland’s CYO and has been the Track and Field Commission chair for the past five years overseeing 1400 CYO athletes.  He has encouraged the involvement by an additional 10-15 Nike employees coaching track and field throughout the city of Portland.  Mike has also recently become an assistant coach for Central Catholic’s running programs and those programs have recently produced very competitive teams at the high school level.

Mike loves coaching the HT team.  It’s not just laps and workouts.  He values building relationships with the kids.  There are probably close to 500 kids who he’s worked with through his tenure.  He builds a relationship with the kids based on faith and values.  Holy Trinity kids have gone on to do well in high school track and cross country programs.

The team has been challenged for practice space, splitting time between Valley Catholic and Westview High Schools.  Concerns about safety (lacrosse teams play on the infield during track practice) and availability have sparked a need to explore building a track of our own.  Mike has researched putting in a track at Holy Trinity.  It’s a 320 meter, six lane all-weather track with infield for football and soccer.  Mike’s dream is a state-of-the-art track so advanced that Nike could test Olympic shoes on it.  This track would also have a 30-40 year life span.

Mike is putting a fundraising campaign "Field of Dreams" together that will solicit funds from corporate as well as individual sources.  Some money has already been committed.  To find out more please contact him at httrackteam@yahoo.com.
