“It is especially difficult to pray when a person is very ill, particularly if one has been receiving medication for pain. Remembered one-liners [of scripture] can be a comfort in great pain, but sometimes even this is not possible. A woman who had an extensive hospital stay due to cancer surgery told me how she could not pray during those intense days. But she took great solace in the fact that her community of friends and family were praying, not just praying for her, but praying in her place. “How comforting,” she said to me, “to know that the community is at prayer even though I cannot pray.”
